Doctor Hank Sanford shifted in his seat as he smiled at his patient sitting rigid on his Chesterfield couch.
This was not her first session, she had been attending his psychiatry practice for over a year now, but every week she looked like it was her first day.
His office overlooked Sydney Harbour and most days he would stare out of the window at the sensational view. He repeated the question, “How does that make you feel?” while only half listening to the answer.
Not today; today he was talking with Jane Wilson, and she was discussing one of her more interesting subjects.
“Tell me more about her.” he asked.
“More about my flatmate, Ruby?” queried his homely middle-aged patient.
Doctor Sanford squinted his eyes in thought and nodded slowly.
Jane was suddenly defensive, irritated by the thought of having to repeat herself yet again.  “You know Ruby Castle! She is gorgeous, she is bisexual and she is a nymphomaniac. If you want to know more, then I suggest reading her blog!”
The outburst was a breakthrough of sorts. Jane was never aggressive like this, she always protected herself. Controlled herself. Ruby was never a sore spot and despite the immoral behaviour, reprehensible choices and offensive language, Jane considered her to be a good friend.
Doctor Sanford shifted in his seat again and frowned disapprovingly. Jane was doing it again, trying to justify Ruby’s behaviour and blocking out the bad influence she was.
He sighed, like she should have known better. “We have discussed this and you know I have to hear it from you.”
Jane slumped into the couch, defeated by what she knew to be good for her, and the argument she would never win.
Doctor Sanford relaxed his composure and repeated his request.
“Now Jane, tell me more about Ruby.”
